Following its hugely acclaimed debut on Orchid Classics, the Tesla Quartet returns alongside clarinettist Alexander Fiterstein in works by Mozart, Finzi, John Corigliano and Carolina Heredia.

In its latest Orchid release, the Tesla Quartet offers fresh and vibrant interpretations of repertoire ranging from the Classical epoch to the present day. Mozart’s exquisite Clarinet Quintet finds an outstanding advocate in this performance by Alexander Fiterstein, and Finzi’s autumnal Bagatelles, originally composed for clarinet and piano, are heard here in a delightful arrangement by Christian Alexander. Contemporary American composer John Corigliano wrote his deeply-moving Soliloquy in memory of his late father, and Argentinian composer Carolina Heredia wrote Ius in Bello in 2014 as a fascinating exploration of social justice, using Latin-American popular styles to add colour and depth to the work’s tensions, its dream-like quality evoking the desire for peace.

Joseph Shiner and Somi Kim perform the last chamber works ever written by Brahms: his Clarinet Sonatas, heard here alongside his sublime Clarinet Trio, for which they are joined by cellist Yoanna Prodanova. Brahms was so enchanted by the playing of clarinettist Richard Muhlfeld that he came out of retirement in order to write four chamber works for the soloist. Three of those works are featured on this album, interpreted by the exciting up-and-coming clarinettist Joseph Shiner, with Somi Kim at the piano and, for the Trio, cellist Yoanna Prodanova. As so often in Brahms’s paired works, the two sonatas have contrasting characters, the second gentler than the first, although both are highly nuanced, balancing taut structures with expressive, often wistful lyricism. The Trio is an expansive piece which includes in its first movement a theme originally intended for what would have been Brahms’s Fifth Symphony.

Beethoven’s Op.1 Piano Trios began with two works sure to charm Viennese audiences, but in his Piano Trio op.1 no.3 in C minor, featured on this album, we begin to hear the radical, uncompromising Beethoven in music of volcanic force, contrasted with a sublime slow movement. The ‘Archduke’ Trio, op.97, marked Beethoven’s final public performance as a pianist, but was also a turning-point in his output, its warm-hued nature combining heavenly serenity with earthy joie de vivre.

Andrei Ioniţă OBLIQUE STRATEGIES

Described in The Times as 'One of the most exciting cellists to have emerged for a decade', former BBC New Generation Artist Andrei Ionita draws together some of the greatest music ever written for solo cello. Ionita gives the world-premiere recording of Australian composer Brett Dean s 11 Oblique Strategies, from which the album takes its name. Dean s work was inspired by the Oblique Strategy cards invented by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt to spark creativity. In J.S. Bach s exquisite Cello Suite No.1 a sense of harmony is created using a single melodic line, with mesmerising results. Kodály's pioneering Sonata (1915) is another giant of the solo cello repertoire, and the album concludes with Black Run (2001) by contemporary Swedish polymath Svante Henryson.
